The many faces of public housing: Griot: Culture & Wisdom Exchange

Article Abstract:

The National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) 2005 Awards of Excellence reward programs that take into account the physical and social needs of each unique resident population. One such winner is the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA), which, recognizing the importance and value of intergenerational activities, developed the Griot: Culture & Wisdom Exchange program to foster relationship building between its youth and senior citizens.

The many faces of public housing: Dynamic Doors -- Portals to Creativity

Article Abstract:

A community effort and public art event called eDynamic Doors -- Portals to CreativityE was one of the winners of the National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) 2005 Awards of Excellence. The Lexington, Kentucky, event invited artists to redecorate doors removed from a housing complex slated for demolition, and the proceeds from the exhibition and sale of the doors were used toward arts organizations and art programs for public housing youth.

The many faces of public housing: SUMHAR -- an accredited learning center

Article Abstract:

A 65% resident unemployment rate and resident population of whom only 43% had finished high school compelled the Gallatin Housing Authority (GHA) to develop its own learning center in an effort to help more of their residents become workforce ready. The SUMHAR Center, recognized and accredited by the Tennessee Board of Regents, is a recipient of a National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) 2005 Award of Excellence.
