Article Abstract:

Communities worldwide have been experiencing disequilibrium in sex-ratio at marriageable ages. In India the situation is balanced by the increasing influence of dowry in marriages and also decrease in spousal age difference, while in Africa its polygamy that plays a crucial role. Applying the report of a 1984 census, a relationship between the marriage squeeze and increases in informal marriage has been established.
