The role of the nursing home social worker in terminal care

Article Abstract:

The vital role of social workers in terminal care in nursing homes was studied by sending out a total of 60 questionnaires to 14 nursing homes in the greater Milwaukee, WI, area. Results, analyzed based on a response rate of 76.6%, indicated that care for the dying was not an integral part of nursing home social work training. This fact accounted for the absence of burden experienced by a majority of the respondents. Since social service was based on giving emotional stability and assistance, the Social Service Department must reconsider the value of terminal care.
