The polls - trends: governance and reform of public education in the United States

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the answers to the most repeated survey questions addressing the governance of public education shows that the issue of public education has several political as well as substantive complications. The most controversial issues include public funding for private and parochial schools, school desegregation, equalization of funding and national standards. Article Abstract:

Norton Long's essay 'The Local Community as an Ecology of Games' can be a useful source of plans for educational reform. Long's thesis is that ecological planning of cities depends on collective action and not merely on individual attempts. Long believes that urban education is also a collective achievement. School reform policies should be directed toward an understanding of the need for collective effort for sustaining the ecology.
