There's far more than tenure on the butcher block: a larger context for the recent crisis at the University of Minnesota

Article Abstract:

Tenure is often attacked not in an isolated manner but as part of a broad systematic change that bears significant ramifications for the academic world. Social system factors, such as stiffer competition for students and for public money and altering public attitudes, have given rise to budget cuts which, in turn, have altered views regarding university management. The academe has been affected by the prevailing view that higher education is now more of a bottom line-type of business than a noble endeavor. These developments, such as those that unfolded at the University of Minnesota, have created a need to assess the forces that have made tenure a contentious issue and what steps are necessary to protect it.

Neural network models of religious belief

Article Abstract:

Sociologists have so far failed to exploit the potential of neural network technology to develop rigorous sociological theories. In particular, a neural network based on the maximization of variance across categories in a category scheme known as varimax nets can be employed in modeling the Stark-Bainbridge theory of religion. However, much work remains to be done before neural networks can be gainfully used in the study of sociological theories.
