What happens to foster kids: educational experiences of a random sample of foster care youth and a matched group of non-foster care youth

Article Abstract:

Children who have grown up in foster care houses experience greater difficulties in school compared to their nonfoster peers. They have lower educational achievement level, experience more disruption in their education and have trouble adjusting and performing in school. Social workers also tend to have lower expectations of foster children going on to college and do not encourage planning for education beyond high school. Foster children are more vulnerable than their peers because of their situation and more research is needed on social work practices which may be biased against them.

Risk factors for chronic posttraumatic stress symptoms and behavior problems in children and adolescents following a home fire

Article Abstract:

This article examines factors associated with behavior disorders and post-traumatic stress symptoms in children who experienced a home fire within the previous year. Findings indicate that guilt, worry, dissatisfaction with family support, attributing blame, and being present during the fire were associated with developing conduct problems and post-traumatic stress symptoms.

Effects of a solution-focused mutal aid group for Hispanic children of incarcerated parents

Article Abstract:

This study analyzes the effectiveness of interventions for children with a family member in prison, focusing on the impact of therapy on the self-esteem of Hispanic children with incarcerated parents Findings suggest positive outcomes from group interventions.
