When white men can't do math: necessary and sufficient factors in stereotype threat

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze two assumptions about conditions necessary for the stereotype threat to hinder intellectual test performance in mathematics. The premise that anyone could be made to underperform on a difficult intellectual test was examined. Results indicated that an individual need not be chronically targeted by stereotypes to be impaired by them on intellectual tests. Findings also showed that chronic feelings of stigmatization were not a critical factor in underperformance.

A particular resiliency to threatening environments

Article Abstract:

Race/sex composition of small groups is manipulated to assess intellectual performance, since being in the numerical minority can impair such performance. Results reveal that high self-monitors may be resilient to threatening environments because they react to negative stereotypes with increased (and not decreased) performance, and the results are discussed in relation to theories of inter-group contact, stereotype threat, and stress and coping.

Identity bifurcation in response to stereotype threat: women and mathematics
