The comic genius at number 67

Article Abstract:

An English Heritage plaque has been unveiled on the house in Charlton, London, England, where Italian novelist Italo Svevo, whose real name was Ettoro Schmitz, lived between 1903 and 1913 and for a short time after the first world war. Svevo's work is not widely known in the UK, although it can be argued that his 'Confessions of Zeno' is the greatest comic novel of the 20th century. He is among the few novelists to actually like the characters he presents.

Women, taxes and benefits: a critique of Cuvillier's proposals

Article Abstract:

Cuvillier's proposal to induce women to work outside the home by eliminating the favorable tax treatment for working at home is not practical and discriminatory. The proposal does not recognize the fact that many women do not work outside the home because they could not find cheap childcare services. Furthermore, the fact that an increasing number of women are now working outside the home makes Cuvillier's proposal unnecessary.

Modeling stratified diffusion in biological invasions

Article Abstract:

A model of biological invasion using the von Foerster equation and a Skellam model enables an estimate of range expansion expressed in terms of the leap distance, the colonization rate of long-distance migrants and the rate of expansion for neighborhood diffusion. The model accounts for the different types of nonlinear expansion seen in biological invasions.
