Article Abstract:

Attempts are recounted of Chinese citizens' efforts to return to their village after being relocated for a 1956 dam construction project. Topics include the successful negotiation of citizen leaders with the regional governor, and the hardships that awaited the citizens due to permanent land alterations resulting from the dam.

Experiences are recounted of Chinese citizens who were relocated during the nation's 1956 construction of the Three Gate Gorge dam. Topics include the severe hardships imposed by the desolate region to which the citizens were relocated, such as lack of food and shelter, prompting numerous attempts to escape.
