Big-fish-little-pond effects on gymnastics self-concept: Social comparison processes in a physical setting

Article Abstract:

Academic self-concept is positively predicted by an individual's own gymnastics skills but negatively predicted by the average level of skills of other participants in the same gymnastics class, in big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE) in educational settings. Although there is impressive support for the generality of the negative effect of the BFLPE on academic self-concept in academic settings, this was apparently the first demonstration of the effect in a sport or exercise setting.

Development and validation of a scale to measure optimal experience: the flow state scale

Article Abstract:

Flow State Scale (FSS), a new measure of flow in sport and physical exercise setting, has nine scales of the 36-item instrument supported by the confirmatory factor analysis. Results support a higher order flow factor, which explains the correlations among the nine first-order FSS factors. The measurement of distinct flow factors helps in a better evaluation of FSS theory than global scores. Further research is required to expand the area of FSS response.
