Excuses, excuses, excuses: a cognitive behavioral approach to exercise implementation

Article Abstract:

The Exercise Thoughts Questionnaire (ETQ), formulated to identify the frequency with which individuals have thoughts regarding reasons or excuses for not exercising at the present time, was examined in three studies for its dependability and construct validity. Such thoughts were assumed to interact with exercise behavior. The three separate studies of 165 undergraduate women, 209 male and female undergraduates, and 201 male and female undergraduates showed that ETQ has good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Exploratory analyses showed women reporting a higher frequency of such thoughts than men.

Physical activity self-definitions: correlates and perceived criteria

Article Abstract:

Self-inference and perception are important factors in developing a model for physical activity self-definitions. Perceptions were consistent with self-definition according to social world variables, motivation-related factors and behavior. Participants cited significantly more behavioral than affective criteria, which can impact self-inference and alter modeling processes.
