Exercise and chronic pulmonary disease: limitations and rehabilitation

Article Abstract:

Chronic pulmonary disease is a common condition that results in disabling breathlessness and exercise capacity impairment. Pulmonary rehabilitation involving exercise reconditioning is an essential component of secondary preventative care and should include rigorous resistance and aerobic training that is customized to the patient and results in improvements in daily living.

Exercise in chronic pulmonary disease: aerobic exercise prescription

Article Abstract:

Endurance training that incorporates regular aerobic exercise is an important component of rehabilitation for patients with chronic pulmonary disease. Physical training should be individualized for the patient and involve rigorous aerobic exercise several times a week to help increase exercise capacity and alleviate symptoms like breathlessness.

Exercise in chronic pulmonary disease: resistance exercise prescription

Article Abstract:

Patients diagnosed with chronic pulmonary disease often have reduced skeletal muscle function due to factors such as disease-related myopathy or deconditioning. Findings indicate that participation in a well-structured resistance training program can help reduce muscular dysfunction and exercise intolerance while improving strength and quality of life.
