Theresa McCracken, a cartoonist and writer, spent three summers as a forest fire fighter. Her humorous experiences include having fire retardant dumped on her and a boss who saw injuries in terms of the paperwork involved.

A father, his son and his son's friend were caught in a forest fire while backpacking in California's Marble Mountain Wilderness Area. Their escape was difficult and exhausting, but it made the father proud of his boy.
