Hut and bothered: the venerable Appalachian Mountain Club, protector of the White Mountains, may be chased from its own huts

Article Abstract:

A coalition that opposes the Appalachian Mountain Club's (AMC) conservation policies is accusing the AMC of harming the environment with its hut system. The AMC tries to keep hydroelectric plants from being relicensed and supports using public funds to buy forest land.

Well-heeled hikers: these Appalachian Trail veterans give "over the hill" a new meaning

Article Abstract:

Several older hikers have walked the 2,135-mile trail more than once. One 62-year-old man thought he would be the oldest man on the trail, but he met another hiker who was 76. Many older couples enjoy backpacking after retirement, when they have the time and money.

Rainier's off season: grab your snowshoes and experience Washington's "big mountain" at its most beautiful

Article Abstract:

Mt Rainer National Park gets around 700,000 visitors during August, but only about 14,000 during December. A great way to explore the park during the winter season is on snowshoes. Rampart Ridge has stunning vistas and wildlife such as mountain goats.
