Manipulations of leg mass and moment of inertia: Effects on energy cost of walking

Article Abstract:

The effects that independent alterations in limb mass and moment of inertia about a transverse axis through the hip have on metabolic and mechanical power of walking and peak electromyography (EMG) amplitude are investigated. It was hypothesized that increases in metabolic cost would parallel increases in mechanical power, and that EMG amplitude would increase with greater limb mass or limb moment of inertia.

The effect of weighted vest walking on metabolic responses and ground reaction forces

Article Abstract:

A study investigates how oxygen consumption, relative exercise intensity, vertical ground reaction forces (VGRF), and loading rate (LR) are affected while using a weighted vest (VW) during treadmill walking. Results show using a weighted vest can increase the metabolic costs, relative exercise intensity, and loading of the skeletal system during walking.

The influence of walking speed on dynamic loading on the human musculoskeletal system

Article Abstract:

Fifteen healthy men participated in treadmill tests at five different speeds to measure the magnitude of shock waves experienced by the human musculoskeletal system while walking. Results indicate that heel-strike generated shock waves increase significantly with walking speed and directly influence dynamic loading.
