North American professional team sport franchises ownership patterns and global entertainment conglomerates

Article Abstract:

This article examines the interconnection between major professional sports franchises with media/entertainment conglomerates. The authors conclude that North American professional sports franchises are increasingly becoming under the control of the media/entertainment industry which is creating inflated salaries and undermining the ability of smaller sports franchises to compete.

Sport volunteerism and social capital

Article Abstract:

Relation between sports volunteerism and social capital is explored in the article and factors such as class, gender and age influencing distribution of social capital is studied. A strong relation between the sports volunteerism and social capital occurs when there is long-term volunteerism.

Sporting goods trade, international division of labor, and the unequal hierarchy of nations

Article Abstract:

No dominant critical theory about the international division of labor satisfactorily accounts for trends in the sporting goods sector. Data from the 28 countries contributing to this study suggests increasing regionalization as well as globalization of sporting goods trade.
