The relationship of personality characteristics, life stress, and coping resources to athletic injury

Article Abstract:

The stress and injury model was evaluated in collegiate athletes to study the effect of personality characteristics, life stress and coping mechanisms of athletes to the occurrence of injury. Injuries encountered in one athletic season were surveyed and correlated with predetermined psychological variables. Results indicated a direct relationship between injury and life stress however, minor life events do not predispose to injury. Social support corelated to severity and not to frequency of sports injuries although control variables were not factors influencing its occurrence.

The relationship between competitive anxiety and self-presentational concerns

Article Abstract:

A 1998 study performed by researchers at the Univ of North Dakota supports M. Leary's 1992 conclusion that self-presentational dynamics are related to competitive anxiety. Self-presentational concerns revolve around the image one believes one projects upon others, and include images of fatigue, physical appearance and athletic coordination. The concerns were more related to cognitive anxiety than to somatic anxiety.
