Chlorinated fluorocarbon refrigerants are being phased out to protect the ozone layer, but low-impact replacements are available for marine refrigeration systems. Current 134a technology is one step in the search for an environmentally-friendly refrigerant.

Two commonly used spinnaker-gybing systems are the end-for-end system commonly used on smaller boats and the dip-pole system most often used on larger boats. The hardware used in each system and new spinnaker systems to make gybing easier are described.
