Stowe, Vermont's combination of romance, great slopes, and nightlife propelled it to the top ranking. Sugarbush's remodeling cannot obscure its top terrain. Killington, Sugarloaf/USA, Mad River Glen, Whiteface, Jay Peak, Stratton, Sunday River, and Mount Snow round out the top-10.

Breckenridge ski resort's new Peak 7 requires a 30-45 minute hike uphill to the mountaintop. The resort did not put in a chair-lift because of difficulties getting a permit, and because it wanted to appeal to adventure seekers. Peak 7 is critiqued by a veteran skier.
