Toward a new measure of intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation in sports: the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS)

Article Abstract:

Application of the Sports Motivation Scale (SMS) on 593 university athletes with an average age of 19.27 years revealed three types of effects, Intrinsic Motivation, Extrinsic Motivation and Amotivation effects, on the sporting performance of an athlete. Application of SMS on a second group of 50 soccer players including 31 females and 19 males from the Ottawa region revealed that the SMS in English has the required level of validity and dependability over a five-week span.
