Bob Baumgartner, 88, bought his first boat, a 16-ft Dee-Wite, in 1930 and by 1940 he had owned a 38-ft Chris Craft and a 92-ft Consolidated. He began serious cruising in a former Coast Guard cutter converted to a 90-ft yacht. His current boat is a Cheoy Lee 66 Long Range Cruiser.

A boating enthusiast relates how he purchased a 21-year-old yacht sight unseen. The old boat is smart-looking and appears to be designed well. However, age has had a telling effect on it. It requires a substantial amount of repair which the enthusiast will pursue willingly.

The best way to enjoy yachting is to have a passionate commitment to the sport. Bud Finkl, a 76-year-old who injured his back racing a 26-ft boat at more than 60 mph, is an excellent example of a committed sportsman.
