Receiving array design for the over-the-horizon radar

Article Abstract:

GEC-Marconi is designing the RF and signal processing parts of over-the-horizon (OTH) high frequency (HF) radars for use in wide-area surveillance. Large-aperture receiving arrays are required for this type of radar, and each radar needs a 3km linear array of nearly 500 elements. A digital receiver is used per element, reducing the need for accurate signal path matching in the beamforming process. However a calibration system is still required to compensate for variability.

Spectral control of HF radar transmissions

Article Abstract:

An important requirement for long-range skywave over-the-horizon (OTH) radars, being developed by GEC-Marconi, is for new standards of performance with regard to non-interference with other HF band users. New methods of transmitted waveform design that can achieve much lower out-of-band spectral levels, involve the use of frequency-domain methods of waveform generation. To achieve linearity, digital sweep-to-sweep feedback around the transmitter amplifier is used.

HF skywave radar systems modelling

Article Abstract:

GEC-Marconi and Telecom of Australia are developing the Over-the Horizon radars (OTHR) for the Commonwealth of Australia. The predicted performance of radar hardware and software configurations has to be evaluated and the systems model can be used to test the proposed design at certain stages of development. A complex Signal Path Model (SPM) of an OTHR system was developed at GMRDS, simulating the entire signal path. Its essential components are outlined.
