The application of software radio techniques for airborne passenger telephony and future air traffic control communication systems

Article Abstract:

The interest in software radios has focused on using wide-band analogue-to-digital (ADC) and digital-to-analogue (DAC) converters. Radios can be designed with reusable programmable digital processing hardware, requiring the radio tuning function to be undertaken in an analogue way. The Airadio Division (ARD) of GEC-Marconi Electro-Optics Ltd has been using the technology for airborne communications applications. An overview of hardware and software technologies used in Terrestrial Flight Telephone System (TFTS) products is provided.

Modelling and simulation of communication systems

Article Abstract:

Digital communication system design involves defining the system architecture, the modelling of the algorithms and behaviour of the system. The designer can use various tools to assist in design choice. The recent trends in the modelling and simulation of radio-based digital communication systems are addressed, focusing on the algorithm/behavioural element of the process. The move away from computer modelling using high-level languages such as FORTRAN, towards high-level design and simulation models is discussed.

Infra-red materials activities at GEC-Marconi Infra-Red Limited: Part II - Epitaxial growth techniques

Article Abstract:

The history and current status of liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) and metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy, (MOVPE) methods are considered. LPE from Te-rich solutions forms large areas of uniform cadmium mercury telluride, used in focal plane arrays (FPAs). LPE layers are desirable for use in PC applications, due to low background donor levels. MOVPE provides a way of producing fully-doped heterostructures for novel devices.
