A case exists for class improvement

Article Abstract:

Classification societies in the shipping industry have come up with advanced techniques to increase the reliability of their rating systems. These societies have been widely criticized for their inability to effectively determine ships' capability for voyage. The deficiencies inherent in older systems are therefore being patched up by newer systems using the latest in 3-D computer graphics and simulation technology to test the design and operating characteristics of vessels.

No going overboard with waste treatment

Article Abstract:

Increasing environmental awareness has prompted the International Maritime Organization to issue more stringent regulations on the disposal of shipboard waste. In addition, many countries have declared their territorial waters as pollution-free zones where the dumping of shipboard waste is strictly prohibited. Maritime carriers are complying with these new rules by implementing stricter policies and acquiring new waste management and disposal technologies.
