Boiling points

Article Abstract:

Incidences of soot fires in exhaust gas boilers have tended to nullify the benefits offered by these systems, which is free heat energy for steam production. An examination of the contributory factors leading to soot fires revealed the importance of such factors as water inlet velocity, mean exhaust gas velocity and pinch point. MAN B and W recommends a pinch point of 15 to 20 degrees Centigrade, an exhaust gas velocity of over 15 m/sec and a high water inlet velocity that will keep the deposits below their burning points.

DnV reports rise in exhaust gas boiler damage

Article Abstract:

The Dutch ship classification society Det norske Veritas (DnV) reports increased cases of damage to exhaust gas boilers on relatively new vessels in recent years. Such incidents have been categorized into two groups, the mechanical damage from vibrations, corrosion and tube cracks because of clogging and soot fires with melted and distorted tubes. DnV also cites three important factors affecting exhaust gas boiler fires.
