CLT propeller on capesize bulker

Article Abstract:

Cargill International has conducted sea trials on its 13,500 dwt orange juice carrier, the Bebedouro, in Jul. 1997. The Bebedouro was alternatively equipped with a 5.2 meter diameter conventional four-bladed propeller and a 4.8 meter diameter, five-bladed CLT propeller. Results of the trials showed that the CLT propeller generated a 9% increase in fuel savings as well as a significant reduction in vibration. The CLT propeller has generated a substantial increase in ship maneuverability.

Study develops bulker safety techniques

Article Abstract:

A study jointly conducted by Lloyd's Register, BHP Transport, the Australian Maritime Engineering Cooperative Research Centre and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries has shown the feasibility of developing an integrated hull condition monitoring system that would ensure the safety of bulk carriers. The components of such a system would be on-board instrumentation and data gathering, a data analysis mechanism and a decision support subsystem.

Bulker stresses raise concerns

Article Abstract:

A report released by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) shows that the measures taken by the shipping industry to reduce the incidence of bulk carrier sinkings and crew losses were ineffective. This finding underscores the need for new ship designs with improved structural safety and capable of withstanding different forms of stresses. Among the designs recommended by the ABS is the double-hulled concept.
