Combi carrier comeback?

Article Abstract:

O-J Libaek and Partners, a Norwegian shipbroker, has introduced a new combination carrier and more advanced model called the optimum 2000 Tri-Cargo Carrier (TCC). Although combination carriers cost 15-20% more, the TCC is more expensive since it can load more than one type of cargo. New features include a centerline bulkhead and an automatic anti-cargo heeling systems to increase design stability and strength. Other features include double sealed longitudinal hatch openings that prevent leakages and sludge tanks to enable discharging, cleaning and loading cargo.

An open and shut case?

Article Abstract:

An American Institute of Marine Underwriters' Technical Services Committee report on the risks involved in cargo transport aboard hatchless container ships presented both negative and positive conclusions about such vessels. The report noted that cargo stowed on such vessels are more susceptible to damage since they are exposed to the weather. However, it stressed the possibility of losing cargo on such vessels is also lower. Hatchless container ship owners criticized the report and defended the reliability of such vessels.
