EU aims double blow at ferry operators

Article Abstract:

Many European ferry and passenger ship operators are criticizing the European Union's proposal to eliminate duty free sales in EU countries by 1999. The European Community Shipowners Association of Brussels fears that the move could result in disastrous consequences for operators and customers such as higher ticket prices and the cancellation of some routes. The ferry industry in EU countries is comprised of some 300 ships which service some 110 million passengers yearly and generate about $1.44 billion in duty-free revenues.

Cooperation required to fight Tunnel

Article Abstract:

Ferry operations in the English Channel is being slowly dominated by the Channel Tunnel, principally because of its marketing strategies such as a 50% cut in its fares during the holiday season. The company has already about 40% market share, which is a significant achievement considering that it had only started operating sometime in 1995. To increase competition, the UK government has authorized other ferry operators to engage in cooperative ventures.
