Exceeding recommended standards for safe hot tub use

Article Abstract:

The safety of exceeding three of the Natl Spa and Pool Assn's hot tub guidelines is investigated. The guidelines that were tested were a 15 minute immersion limit, a maximum temperature of 40 degrees centigrade and abstinence from alcohol. Fourteen male subjects underwent four 24 minute trials of 40 degrees centigrade and 41.5 degrees centigrade water immersion after imbibing a drink of 0.54 g of alcohol kg-1 of body weight or a placebo. The results showed that the dangers of hot tub use by healthy males with the tested level of alcohol intake did not appear to increase.
