Locked into a downward spiral
Article Abstract:
The multi-purpose cargo ship market is being neglected and is expected to steadily deteriorate in the next four years, according to a Drewry Shipping Consultants report. Figures indicate that the multi-purpose fleet has decreased by 26% or 16 million dead weight tons in the past ten years. Drewry claims that the market seems to prefer more specialized cellular container ships and handy-sized bulk carriers instead of the highly flexible multi-purpose cargo ships.

Keeping a class act
Article Abstract:
Cyprus has shown signs of its willingness to strictly enforce maritime regulations when its Dept. of Merchant Shipping demanded that its courts decide whether or not to confiscate a cargo ship found guilty of violations. Previously, the country was not a favorite site for shipping flag registry because of its laxity in the enforcement of international shipping laws. This latest move may enhance its image.
