Pacific chat gathers pace

Article Abstract:

International communications is expected to make advancements to meet the continuing growth of the marine industry, particularly in the Far East. Trading patterns will possibly change but Inmarsat believes that the limited number of deep water ports in the Far East may cause smaller ships to be more affected than operators of larger tonnage. Inmarsat also believes that one area which is likely to grow is social calls, since more seafarers are expected to phone home more regularly.

Message management aids data transmission

Article Abstract:

Marinet Systems' new message management and switching software system provides transmission cost reduction and faster transmission rates. The new system can transmit compressed data at a rate of 250,000 characters a minute. In addition, it can transmit and receive messages at the same time because it operates on a duplex mode. These capabilities allow better communications links between vessels and their onshore facilities.
