Providing thrust in one direction

Article Abstract:

Shipowners are addressing technical problems by hiring a single sub-contractor to provide them with complete propulsion packages that meet their needs. SweFerry agrees that having a single contractor for the propulsion system can help it target its resources better. However, Cenargo disagrees citing the yard as the main newbuilding coordinator. Engine makers Wartsila NSD and MAN B&W claim they have the complete propulsion packages that can provide a unified solution, with their Propac and Genuine Propulsion Package, respectively. Wartsila NSD is the main contractor for the Cenargo ships.

Slight increase belies current gloom

Article Abstract:

The international shipbuilding industry recorded increases in the deadweight delivered and total number of ships for 1998 as the impact of a downturn will be fully felt by the industry in the 21st century. The top shipbuilders for the year were Japan, Korea, China, Germany and Poland, respectively. However, both Japan and Korea suffered declines in market share while China had a marked increase. Japan's share dropped to 40.34% in 1998, compared to 42.68 in 1997 while Korea slipped from 33.88% in 1997 to 32.79% in 1998. For engine builders, MAN B and W retained its first-place position.

Constant development refines designs

Article Abstract:

Several diesel engine developers presented their recommendations in an international conference hosted by French oil lub firm Elf Lub in Nov. 1994 in Paris, France. One of the most important issues discussed was the expected growth of container ships and the consequent increase in demand for low-speed engines. The possibility of launching larger-bore engines was also dealt with. Participants agreed that new engine designs should consider durability and ability to run using only low grade fuels.
