Airtours performs new trick on Europe's stage

Article Abstract:

British tour operator, Airtours, is set to become the market leader in Belgium after offering 70 million pounds sterling for Belgium's largest tour company, Sun International. Airtours will acquire a share of the short break holiday market and also the charter airline, Air Belgium. Airtours plans a thorough examination of Sun International's finances before making any major decisions. Airtours is keen on expanding into Europe and Scandinavia because it does not want to openly compete in the United Kingdom (UK) with Thompson, which is the UK market leader.

SAS could lead a move to net fares

Article Abstract:

Scandinavian Airlines System, (SAS), may be about to propose abolishing travel agents' commission and introducing net fares instead. SAS has asked travel agents' associations to discuss the issue before the end of 1997. Agents consider that changing to net fares is inevitable and some positively welcome it because it will make their business more efficient and decrease distribution costs. Asian airlines already have a net fare arrangement.
