Caffeine boost

Article Abstract:

The coffee shop sector in the UK has grown enormously during the 1990s. There are almost 300 outlets in early 1999. The growth in value terms was almost 900% between 1994 and 1998, and there is no indication of any slowdown in this expansion. Coffee houses in the UK have either an Italian or an American format which includes the style of coffee, the decor and the type of food on offer. Major operators include Costa Coffee, Seattle Coffee and Starbucks. Coffee outlets appeal particularly to affluent young people, with US comedy shows based around coffee houses being an important influence in the market.

Making it big

Article Abstract:

There will be a total of 61 large format theatres in Europe by the end of 2000, with 21 opening in 2000 alone. It is clear that there is strong interest in large format exhibitions in Europe, with Euromax reporting attendance exceeding 10 million in 1998, up by 20% from 1996. The leading large format attraction is the IMAX Postsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany, where 1 million tickets were sold in only eight months. IMAX and large format theatres will be developed in 1999 and 2000 in new countries including Malta, Greece, Hungary, Italy and Poland.
