Negotiations taking place at the conference of Lebanese factions at Lausanne, Switzerland, under the supervision of the Syrians, are reported. Although the Druze leader publicly demands the resignation and trial of Lebanese President Gemayel, closed-door discussions may result in a compromise agreement. The Syrians are pressuring the Lebanese delegates to conclude an agreement, and the major points of such a compromise are speculated upon.

Mechanics of the ribosome
Article Abstract:
The ribosome is important in the synthesis of proteins, and the simplest ribosome, from bacteria, consists of the subunits 30S and 50S. Clemons and colleagues and Ban and colleagues have provided electron-density maps of the two ribosomal subunits. The 30S subunit comes from a hyperthermophilic bacterium, while the 50S subunit is from the halophilic archaeon Haloarcula marismortui.
