Case of the exploding figurines
Article Abstract:
Most early ceramics, especially those from Moravia that predate pottery by 15,000 years or so, appear to have been deliberately fractured in firing, perhaps ritually or to aid divination. Many were made from material that resists thermal shock, so their makers had to work hard to shatter them with fire. Depicting Venuses or dangerous animals, these pieces are found almost exclusively in remote areas of camps inside firepits or kilns, suggesting they were not commonly used.
