India suffers some nuclear fall-out

Article Abstract:

India's tourist industry declined 3% during January-May 1998 compared with January-May 1997, although the industry is expected to improve in the remainder of 1998. The decline is attributed to the impact of growing tensions between India and Pakistan and a response to India's nuclear tests in spring 1998. German tours operator Studiosus expects the number of packages it sells to India to increase 11% in 1998, while UK operator Somak Holidays expects its passenger numbers to increase around 15% in 1998.

WATA plans big shake-up to boost its membership

Article Abstract:

The World Association of Travel Agencies (WATA) currently has 220 members in 87 countries. It is looking to attract new members, and could do so through measures such as reducing entrance or membership fees and undertaking more active marketing. Members have criticised the organisation for poor cooperation and for not making the trade aware of its existence. There are currently few members from North America, the Far East, Australasia and south-east Asia.

Mombasa violence hits Kenya tourism

Article Abstract:

The outbreak of violence around Mombasa, Kenya has led to the cancellation of some holidays to the country. Kenya received 900,000 visitors in 1996 and was recovering from troubles in the early 1990s, and there are concerns that it will take months for tourism to recover from the latest unrest. German and UK governments have advised extra precautions when travelling to Kenya.
