Pulling the crowds

Article Abstract:

UK leisure attractions had disappointing figures for 1997 despite record levels of leisure spending and tourism. Visitor numbers have never equalled the peak of 1991 since that year, and 1997 attendances were slightly down on 1996 figures. Attraction managers need to make changes and one important area would be charges. Prices have risen at 5% more than inflation and research also indicates that customers resent operators' efforts to increase spending once the customer is at the attraction. Operators should also be constantly refreshing their product to compete with rival forms of entertainment.

Hotbeds

Article Abstract:

The number of budget hotels in the UK has increased sharply since the early 1990s, with numbers reaching 700 in 1999 and expected to almost double by 2003. A notable change is the growth in demand for accommodation by leisure travellers, accounting for 24% of total room demand in 1999. Businesses are also beginning to adopt a low-cost travel policy, resulting in a growth in the budget end of the hotel market.
