The Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

Article Abstract:

There has been extensive development of the tourist industry in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania since they achieved independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. Investment in infrastructure, hotels, restaurants and city street-scapes has been heavy and there is considerable potential for leisure travel. Of the 9 million visitors in 1998, around 70% have been same-day visitors, with 30% of all arrivals coming from western Europe.

Americas

Article Abstract:

The US attracted around 46.4 million international visitors in 1998, down 2.8% from 1997. The fall is blamed on economic problems in the Far East, the UK, Canada and South America. Among the most popular tourist destinations are Florida, California and New York. It is expected that international tourist arrivals for 1999 will reach 47 million, up 1.3% from 1998, rising to 52.1 million by 2002.
