Tourist Oriented Directional Signs: a self-supporting program to promote rural business and economic development

Article Abstract:

The Tourist Oriented Directional Signs (TODS) programs in Washington State and Oregon were evaluated to determine their cost-effectiveness in promoting tourist-oriented businesses in rural areas. These uniform roadway signs helped motorists determine what small businesses were in the vicinity and gave them directions and the distance to these establishments. In both Oregon and Washington State, nominal business subscriber fees were the primary source of financial support for the TODS programs and these generated economic benefits of up to 2,500 times their costs.

The economic contribution of conventions: the case of Orlando, Florida

Article Abstract:

A study of the development of Orlando, FL, as a convention destination established that economic impact does not result solely from convention spending. The economic impact of conventions and of the spending by delegates prior to and after the convention was studied using 1989 statistics. Application of the multiplier process showed that while convention spending amounted to over $1 billion, the real economic impact of the convention exceeds $3 billion, as it stimulated economic activity in the area.
