Tourist charter

Article Abstract:

The tourist industry worldwide is developing ever more quickly because of the short-term profit motive. Some feel the tourists are not to blame for a certain level of disinterest in sustainable tourism because they are not in the area for long. Sustainable tourism focuses on environmental care to protect cultural and historical resources, the economy and ecology from destruction. Strict building regulations cannot be relied upon to prevent unsustainable tourism development, however. A report of the 1995 World Conference on Sustainable Tourism is presented.

Winning ground: the European Commission is acknowledging tourist destinations which are taking strides in being environmentally aware

Article Abstract:

The European Prize for Tourism and the Environment has been established by the European Commission, which aims to achieve the right balance between tourism and the environment. There will be five British destinations competing including British Waterways and Peak District National Park. Each area drew up a Tourism Development plan which respects the environment, such as British Waterways plan to transform a working industrial past into a leisure asset. The Peak District designed a plan to improve public transport and promote local culture and crafts.

Local papers: sustainable tourism is more talked about than practised, but a new report published by the Countryside Commission sets out the scope for local action

Article Abstract:

21 sustainable tourism projects were examined by The Tourism Company for the Countryside Commission, Rural Development Commission, Department of National Heritage and the English Tourist Board. The projects were all aimed at minimising the impact of tourism on the global environment, and included the Norfolk Coast Project to manage a stretch of the coast containing sensitive wildlife sites.
