Tourism in Antarctica: activities, impacts, and management

Article Abstract:

Antarctica's unique environment has attracted a steadily growing number of tourists. While economically beneficial to cities serving as staging areas, tourist activity poses serious threats to the continent's extremely fragile ecosystem. Although Antarctic Treaty signatories have taken steps to regulate visitor activities, the treaty still lacks specific tourism provisions. Potential conflicts on sovereignty issues have discouraged claimant nations from pursuing individual tourist regulations. An international convention remains the only effective and viable tourism management method.

Communities as destinations: a marketing taxonomy for the effective implementation of the Tourism Action Plan

Article Abstract:

Tourism can help boost small community's local economies. Through tourism, communities attain more visibility and are able to inspire action for the preservation of natural and historic treasures. Communities should focus on the tourism types over which they can exert the most control and put more emphasis on implementing, rather than constantly formulating, strategies. In accordance with Thomas V. Bonoma's taxonomy, tourism marketing strategy should encompass the action, program, system and policy levels in order to permit effective implementation management.

Tourism and traditional people: forging equitable strategies

Article Abstract:

Traditional people and ethnic minorities can sometimes be big tourist attractions. However, the need for cultural conservation to preserve the identities of traditional people who come into contact with the developed world has been recognized by policy makers and tourism officials. As a result, these decision makers and tourism project directors will increase their coordination with each other.
