Track record

Article Abstract:

There are a number of factors to take into account when selecting an athletics track surface. These include the likely weather conditions and the budget for cleaning. The main synthetic surfacing products sold in the UK are porous polyurethane surfaces for local authority, club, college and school sport competitions and solid polyurethane tracks for national and international level events. The latter are built on a dense asphalt base with resilient stone foundation layers. Polyurethane athletics tracks must be regularly cleaned with high pressure jetting equipment.

Mass movement

Article Abstract:

Panel wall brickwork is becoming more popular in UK buildings taking over from traditional gravity-stabilised walls. Better mortars that can transmit tension has resulted in longer wall spans and the better use of materials. The invention of Portland cement has made brickwork stronger but compared to the traditional lime cement it is more brittle. Movement must be absorbed through the location of the joints at the supports. Lime cement allows for movement throughout the brickwork. The location of the movement joints at the supports can affect aesthetics.
