Clothes for the creation

Article Abstract:

Fashion designer Helen Storey describes the work involved in creating a collection of outfits to represent the first 1,000 hours of a human life as part of a Wellcome Trust initiative to promote the partnership between science and art. Work on the 'Primitive Streak' collection was carried out at the London College of Fashion by a team that had grown to 20 people by Jul. 1997. Lack of finance was a problem until the project received sponsorship from the Crafts Council and a grant from the Royal Society/Committee for the Public Understanding of Science.

Energetic definition of fitness? yes, but not that one

Article Abstract:

Brown, Marquet, and Taper (BMT) view the measure of fitness at the height of production as seen in the increase in body size. This is true for immortal organisms but not for other species by which Darwin defines fitness as a lifetime reproductive success. Animal behavior should also be considered to define fitness because animals may choose to maximize their production or not. BMT's use of allometric equations negates the significance of animal behavior. Lastly, size distribution varies in groups and could never be pointed to a single optimum.

Adrenaline luxe

Article Abstract:

Italy's Lake Como has for centuries been one of the destinations of choice for those in search of a luxurious location in which to do nothing at all. Things, however, are changing; the luxury is still there, but now the lake is becoming the place to go for adventure sports such as kite surfing.
