Placido Domingo has been chosen as the new artistic director of the Washington Opera. Critics assume he will merely serve as the opera company's figurehead and fill its need for someone with celebrity status, although Domingo promised to surprise the public with his plans.

Composer Gian Carlo Menotti objected to the inclusion of a conceptual art exhibition in the 1991 Spoleto Festival U.S.A. Menotti delivered an angry ultimatum to the festival board that resulted in the resignation of 22 of its 46 members.

Bernstein's last hurrah

Leonard Bernstein completed the final recording of his life, the operetta 'Candide,' for Deutsche Grammophon. Facing casting problems caused by a flu epidemic in London and his own declining health, he produced an excellent recording.
