Article Abstract:

President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria plans to set up a multi-billion-dollar endowment for the development of science in Nigeria, based on the model of the US National Science Foundation (NSF). UNESCO has suggested that five of Nigeria's universities be selected for extra funding, and the setting up of a politically independent science agency with an endowment from Nigeria's oil revenues and foreign donations will prove beneficial for science in Nigeria and the whole of Africa.

Small step forward

Article Abstract:

Nigeria will be selecting its successor to President Olusegun Obasanjo, who has incorporated science into the continent's development. Obsanjo has given a go-ahead for reforms to Nigeria's science and technology governance and has recognized that they require investing in education and research in order to confront poverty, disease and corruption.
