A gloss on surface properties

Article Abstract:

Researchers have described a simple characteristic of image statistics, the distribution of luminance values in an image, and it is highly correlated with judgments of gloss and lightness. Histogram skew has not explained about the perception of surface material or gloss, but it is a major step towards a theory of the perception of surface materials.

A dynamical calibration of the mass-luminosity relation at very low stellar masses and young ages

Article Abstract:

Mass is the most fundamental parameter of a star, yet it is also one of the most difficult to measure directly. A dynamical determination of the mass of the newly resolved low-mass companion AB Dor C is reported, whose mass is 0.090(plusmn)0.005 solar masses.

An apparently normal gamma ray burst with an unusually low luminosity

Article Abstract:

Gamma-ray bursts (GRB) are under-energetic explosions as shown by radio calorimetry. The brightest GRB's can be seen across the Universe as the gamma rays are highly collimated.
