A one-million-year-old Homo cranium from the Danakil (Afar) Depression of Eritrea

Article Abstract:

A cranium with characteristics of both Homo sapiens and Homo erectus has been found in the Northern Danakil (Afar) Depression, in Eritrea. The cranium was found in deposits linked to mammalian animals of the early to middle Pleistocene Age, and has been dated at around a million years old, and older than previous estimates for homo sapiens. The cranium is almost complete and has been found with two pelvic fragments as well as two incisors. The mix of progressive and primitive features shows a wider variation for this period than seen hitherto.

2.5-million-year-old stone tools from Gona, Ethiopia

Article Abstract:

Stone tools discovered in Gona, Ethiopia, between 1992 and 1994 are the oldest known artifacts from anywhere in the world, as these are dated between 2.6 to 2.5 million years. The sophisticated control of stone fracture mechanics suggests a long period of technological stasis in the Oldowan. More than a thousand of the several thousand stone tools discovered at the site were found in situ at two excavations.
