A sense for landmines

Article Abstract:

Researchers assessing the detection of trinitrotoluene (TNT) in landmines using fluorescent chemosensors have been able to develop films of polymers derived from fluorescent pentiptycene molecules that are not flat. Quenching takes place when the flat TNT molecule is introduced, and it is suggested that the three-dimensional pentiptycene polymer has pores in which the flat TNT molecule quenches fluorescence. The quenching leads to a fall in fluorescence intensity, thus providing the physical basis for signal transduction when TNT is present.

Polymerized colloidal crystal hydrogel films as intelligent chemical sensing materials

Article Abstract:

Chemical sensors respond in several ways to the presence of a specific analyte. A material that alters colour when responding to a chemical signal by way of a change in diffraction properties, has been prepared. The crystalline colloidal array of polymer spheres is polymerized within a hydrogel, that swells or shrinks in the presence of specific analytes. Light is difracted giving rise to intense colour.

Light-emitting diodes as chemical sensors

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the benefits which can be gained through the use of semiconductors as chemical sensors. The modulation of the intensity of the electroluminescence produced by gas analytes is discussed.
