Give in the filaments

Article Abstract:

New techniques measuring the mechanical properties of single molecules, and particularly the compliance of isolated actin filaments, have contributed considerably to muscle research. Study results show that filament compliance comprises nearly half of the compliance of the muscle sarcomere. These tiny filament extensions are measured accurately in intact muscles via advances in synchrotron X-ray technology.

Formation of 'bullets' by hydrodynamical instabilities in stellar outflows

Article Abstract:

The traditional explanation for small, high-density knots in interstellar medium surrounding young stars and supernova remnants has significant problems. Therefore, they are more likely formed by hydrodynamical instabilities in the interactions between outflowing gas and the surrounding medium.

Flexible filaments in a flowing soap film as a model for one-dimensional flags in a two-dimensional wind

Article Abstract:

Interactions between hydrodynamic pressure and drag on swimming fish and flapping flags are discussed. In the case of a flag, two dynamic states exist, stretched-straight and flapping states.
